Dr. Stuart Brown Reflects on Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's 130 Years of Unparalleled Veterinary Care
Lexington, Kentucky – March 9, 2010 – Numerous team
members including veterinarians, office staff, and owners have dedicated
themselves to Hagyard Equine Medical Institute over the past 130 years.
Field veterinarian Dr. Stuart Brown has been a part of the Hagyard
organization since he was 16 years old and owes much of his knowledge,
compassion, and desire for the well-being of the entire equine industry
to Hagyard founders Dr. Charlie Hagyard, Dr. Arthur Davidson, and Dr.
William McGee.
In the 18th century, Lexington, KY, was found to have the best soil content for raising horses due to the high calcium content. From that point on, Lexington became the place to raise quarter horses, standardbreds, and world class thoroughbreds. Given the high demand for quality foals and the large number of breeding facilities in Lexington, it is imperative that the best veterinarians be available to look out for the healthcare of the many stallions, mares, and foals. Brown has been involved with the industry from the very beginning, watching and learning from Dr. Dave Parrish, the farm veterinarian at the small farm he worked on as a child. Parrish inspired Brown to be an equine veterinarian, and when he was 16, Brown was permitted by Dave Fishback, President of Hagyard at the time, to begin riding along with the field veterinarians. These trips instilled knowledge, values, and problem solving skills and helped Brown learn to think quickly about how to problem-solve many equine veterinary dilemnas.
After graduating from Tuskegee University in 1991, Brown began working full-time with Hagyard and over the last 20 years has worked on top racehorses, improved hundreds of foal’s lives, and performed multiple reproductive procedures. Brown loves working for Hagyard, he explained, “Our relationship with the Lexington horse industry is exponential; from the Keeneland Racetrack, to the major public auction sales, to the many famous farms, we have always been there. Our research, innovative medical practices, and the best veterinarians and surgeons have made Hagyard the best in the equine veterinary field. We make it our job to do the best for our clients, from neonates to geriatrics, and most of all we make it our goal to find a solution for all equine medical issues, which is why we are so open to working with many different veterinarians all over the country.”
Hagyard has be an integral organization for a variety of different breeds and disciplines, and has had a particularly large presence in the Thoroughbred industry. Hagyard finds itself providing comprehensive care to future derby winners, champion brood mares, and record breaking stakes horses. These goals would not be achieved without veterinarians such as Dr. Brown. Breaking it down day-to-day, Dr. Brown explained, “I seem to be a jack of all trades. I see about 70-110 mares per day and about 150-200 patients per day, and that includes evaluations of mares, stallions, foals, and yearlings. I prescribe services ranging from specialized techniques in reproduction, such as biopsy and other diagnostic procedures, to routine herd health care for deworming and vaccination strategies. My field care then relates back to the hard work that our pharmacy performs preparing medicines for our clients, that our surgeons and internal medicine clinicians do, the dedicated service of our skilled laboratory technicians, the research our entire team does, and all of the daily activities each veterinarian does.”
