Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Specializes in Theriogenology
Lexington, Kentucky – February 9, 2010 – Hagyard has been a leader in
the equine veterinary practice since it opened in 1876. Located in
Lexington, Kentucky across from The Kentucky Horse Park, Hagyard has
worked with international caliber Saddlebreds, Quarter Horses,
Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and Sport Horses. Each breed and discipline’s
success is dependent upon the ability to produce genetically superior
offspring – a feat made possible by those practicing within Hagyard
Equine Medical Institute’s Theriogenology Department at the McGee
Fertility Center.
Currently, the McGee Fertility Center Theriogenology Department is
working with a variety of different industries to improve and
facilitate animal reproduction. Taking all variables into
consideration, Hagyard veterinarians look at the anatomy and physiology
of the male and female, the chances and different types of reproductive
diseases, as well as numerous other obstetrics and gynecology
practices. Before a mare can be bred, each veterinarian must take into
consideration not only the aforementioned factors, but also whether or
not a live cover is feasible for that particular mare. Should the mare
not tolerate interacting with the stallion, be too valuable or the
stallion’s location be too far from the mare’s, artificial insemination
could be the best route to take. Hagyard is world-renowned for it’s
expertise in and knowledge of various artificial insemination
techniques including the use of Fresh, Cooled, and Frozen Semen.
In addition, the McGee Fertility Center further offers the expertise
and convenience of providing other services and assisted reproductive
techniques to include: reproductive evaluation of mares and stallions,
collection, processing and transport of cooled and frozen semen. As a
Select Breeders affiliate laboratory frozen semen is stored and sent
from around the world. Collection and freezing semen for export is a
wonderful possibility.
Embryo transfer is another invaluable procedure for the future of many
disciplines as it allows the risk to be transferred to a surrogate
mother should the high caliber performance mare be too valuable or
incapable of carrying the baby herself. The process of embryo transfer
is a great way to save the mare from the stress of pregnancy; maintain
a performance mare in work, as well as a great way to have a baby
should the mother’s ability to carry a baby be in question. Hagyard has
the capability to work with each of their clients from the day the foal
is created, to the day he or she is born.
If there are problems during pregnancy, at birth or post foaling, both
mare and foal can be placed in the intensive care or neonatal unit for
supervision, constant attention, and first class care. From memory foam
pillows to oxygen units, the best care in the world is provided to
foals and their dams at Hagyard. Utilizing new computer software,
Hospital Veterinary Management System (HVMS), developed by the company
Business Infusions, Hagyard is able to keep a particularly close eye on
their horses – a truly essential component to a successful breeding
season. The HVMS keeps track of each horse in his or her respective
stalls, and every time a medication is administered, or a
veterinarian’s observance has occurred - it is recorded in the system.
From there, the daily activities are sent to the client so that the
client is fully aware of what is occurring with their horse or foal.
This technology has eliminated both paper waste and personnel error,
while enabling Hagyard to benefit clients by keeping them posted with
up to date information on their horse’s progress.
Hagyard is a full service veterinary facility that offers the most
current veterinary practices for all of their clients in each part of
the United States.
