Lexington, KY – October 19, 2009 – Last month, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and the Markey Cancer Foundation played host to the first annual gala held in honor of Betsy Fishback, a beloved member of the sport horse community. The gala, titled “The Betsy,” was held on September 18 during the $50,000 CSI-W Lexington Grand Prix at the Kentucky Horse Park. The show jumping event was the first grand prix to ever be held in the new Indoor Arena, and the class also concluded a summer-long series called the Hagyard Challenge Series. All sponsor donations and proceeds from the gala went toward cancer patient care and research at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington.

Dr. Andy Clark, CEO of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, commented, “We got the final tally on ‘The Betsy,’ our Markey Cancer Foundation fund raiser. We raised $108,000! We are grateful to be a part of this cause and excited that so many equestrians and members of the Lexington community were able to come together and make a big difference.”

The gala included an exquisite dinner and live auction, welcoming guests as they showed their support for the Markey Cancer Foundation and celebrated Betsy Fishback. Ms. Fishback was an enthusiastic horsewoman and friend to all who knew her; she lost her battle with breast cancer in January of this year. Her husband, Dr. Dave Fishback, one of the owners of the practice, has been with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute since 1975.

Trish Jaracz, Vice President and Director of Development for the Markey Cancer Foundation commented, “The event was a huge success, raising over $100,000! With only about eight weeks to pull it all together, my hopes were to just break even this first year,” she related. “But, when you’re given the opportunity to work with individuals whose actions have no other motive than to make a difference, amazing things can happen.”

She concluded, “The Markey Cancer Foundation was honored to be a part of the team that assembled to create ‘The Betsy,’ and we are looking forward to a long, successful partnership – with this community as the beneficiary.”
