    Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Keeps

Thoroughbred Makeover All in the Family

April 7, 2016, Lexington, Ky.—Hagyard Equine Medical Institute will be the veterinary services sponsor for Thoroughbred Makeover contestant, Carajillo, who is being trained and ridden by Isabela de Sousa, daughter of Hagyard member Karen Wolfsdorf, DVM, DACT, and Sergio de Sousa, a partner at Hidden Brook Farm. In addition, Hagyard Pharmacy will be supplying Isabela and Carajillo (barn name: Chino) with products from its Resolvet line, specifically RelyneGI, RelyteHA electrolyte paste and Repair hoof oil.

The Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover will be held October 27-30 at the Kentucky Horse Park to demonstrate the Thoroughbred’s versatility in horse sports. Horses compete in one or more of 10 disciplines, including English and Western sports as well as foxhunting, polo and “other”. On the final day, the winners of the 10 disciplines compete for the title of America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred.

Bred by Siena Farms, Chino is by Medaglia d'Oro and out of the Saint Ballado mare Prospective Saint. He was raced seven times before being retired last year. Isabela, who turns 15 in May, participated in the U.S. Pony Finals in 2011 and 2012, finishing in the top 30 both times; in 2013 at age 12, she competed in the Pessoa/U.S. Hunter Seat Medal finals. Isabela competed 2013 Kentucky Derby hopeful Dewey Square in the 2015 Thoroughbred Makeover, winning the show jumping division and placing third in show hunters.

“I’m excited about Hagyard providing veterinary care for Carajillo during his transition period from the racetrack to his new career!” Isabela said. “It’s a great comfort knowing that the best veterinarians will be looking after my horse.”

Before Isabela put Chino into consistent training, Hagyard veterinarians Liz Barrett, DVM, DACVS, and Laura Werner, DVM, DACVS, performed a health and soundness exam on the bay gelding.

“Chino is a well put together horse,” said Dr. Barrett. “He is fit and sound and flexed well. We look forward to watching him become a successful competitor in his new career.”

Isabela and Chino have been invited by the Retired Racehorse Project to participate in demonstration rides during the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, held at the Kentucky Horse Park April 28-May 1. The demos will be held in the Walnut Ring at 4 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
